Commercial Setting

Perhaps the UK’s largest remaining mutual building society.  Their Technology Support division faced a major challenge to upgrade the Society’s infrastructure to support future e-commerce applications.  The client retained a 3rd party manage a strategic e-commerce programme.

Scope

The society sought to compliment the internal IT team with 3rd party involvement to deliver the enormous scale of change required.  Despite being the preferred supplier, the 3rd party IT partner felt uncomfortable about the size and complexity of the challenge.

Our Intervention

We were retained by the client and 3rd party under a tripartite agreement to

  • plan and manage the programme’s 26 work streams
  • manage the programme budget £9m
  • control the programme issues and risks
  • plan and manage the product “go live”
  • matrix manage the key implementation teams
  • manage upgrades to back-office systems
  • manage the creation of an end-to-end test facility for future developments.

 Outcomes

The society’s first market leading e-commerce application, an e-Savings account, went live on the new infrastructure in Summer 2000. This was followed by the launch of  Internet-based Travel Insurance capability.  The society continues to lead the field in it’s own sector and regarded as an innovator. They adopted our style of approach for future projects/programmes.
